Frequently Asked Questions
How does Shockwave therapy work?
How does Shockwave therapy work?
Shockwave therapy is a non surgical treatment in which sound energy is targeted to specific damaged tissues within the abnormal area. This is believed to cause a pro-inflammatory response by increasing the blood flow within the affected area, stimulating cell regeneration and healing, and decreasing local factors which can cause pain.

Why have shockwave therapy in your practice?
Why have shockwave therapy in your practice?
It is a tool for treating chronic pain with a long chain of clinical evidence demonstrating high success rates for patients. In addition, your patients will need fewer treatments that take less than 10 minutes each.
What are the differences between radial and focused shockwaves?
What are the differences between radial and focused shockwaves?
Although both shockwave technologies produce the same therapeutic effects, a focused shockwave allows for an adjustable depth of penetration with constant maximum intensity, making the therapy suitable for treating both superficial and deep-lying tissues.
A radial shockwave allows changing the nature of the shock by using different types of shockwave transmitters. However, the maximum intensity is always concentrated superficially, which makes this therapy suitable for the treatment of superficially lying soft tissues.
You may see many different terms used for shockwave therapy, including ESWT (Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy), acoustic wave therapy, radial shockwave therapy, and focused/linear shockwave therapy (F-SW). However, not all shockwave therapies are the same. Only focused shockwave therapy devices are approved to be used by the regulatory body for treating sexual health conditions. Focused shockwave treatment provides a targeted treatment that reaches the cellular level of your condition.
How long do focused shockwave therapy procedures take? How many should I recommend to my patients?
How long do focused shockwave therapy procedures take? How many should I recommend to my patients?
Typically, a focused shockwave treatment would take no more than 10 minutes. Most patients typically need about 3-5 sessions for long-lasting therapeutic results. However, the number of sessions can vary based on the patient's condition, the medical specialist’s recommendations, and the desired therapy outcomes.
What Are the Benefits of Focused Shockwave Therapy?
What Are the Benefits of Focused Shockwave Therapy?
There are various benefits to choosing focused shockwave treatment over other types of shockwave treatment options. Focused shockwave treatment is a non-invasive, painless procedure that doesn’t require any numbing creams. Most of our patients can return to their daily activities once they are through with the treatment. Some additional benefits include:
- No Pain
- No Invasive Surgery
- No Anesthetic
- No Risk of Infection
- No Scars
- No Pills or Drugs
- No Downtime
- 80-90% Efficiency
Is the shockwave treatment painful?
Is the shockwave treatment painful?
The treatment itself can be painful during the application of the ESWT. The treatment is delivered according to patient response, if a patient is unable to tolerate the pain levels the settings will adjusted to reduce the discomfort. A mild ache may occur later that day but should pass after a day. A patient may therefore take analgesic pain relief such as paracetamol before or after attending the session. NSAID's are not recommended during treatment.
Are there any side effects/risks?
Are there any side effects/risks?
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) have deemed this procedure to be safe treatment option with minimal reported side effects. You will experience some pain during the treatment, but you should be able to tolerate this. Following the treatment, there is a small chance you may experience some temporary redness or bruising to the area which normally resolves quickly. There is a small risk of tendon rupture and damage to the soft tissue.
